The cleansing of a leper
Luke 5:12-16
It happened that there was a man full of leprosy in one of the towns where Jesus was; and when he saw Jesus, he fell prostrate, pleaded with him, and said,
“Lord, if you wish, you can make me clean.” Jesus stretched out his hand, touched him, and said, “I do will it. Be made clean.” And the leprosy left him immediately.
Then he ordered him not to tell anyone, but“Go, show yourself to the priest and offer for your cleansing what Moses prescribed; that will be proof for them.” The report about him spread all the more, and great crowds assembled to listen to him and to be cured of their ailments, but he would withdraw to deserted places to pray.
Nilinis ni Jesus ang Lalaking Ketongin
Lucas 5:12-16
12Nangyari, nang siya ay nasa isang lungsod, narito, may isang lalaking puno ng ketong. Pagkakita niya kay Jesus, nagpatirapa siya. Ipinamanhik niya sa kaniya na sinasabi: Panginoon, kung ibig mo, malilinis mo ako.
13Sa pag-unat ni Jesus ng kaniyang kamay, siya ay kaniyang hinipo, na sinasabi: Ibig ko, luminis ka. Kapagdaka ay nawala ang kaniyang ketong.
14Iniutos ni Jesus sa kaniya: Huwag mo itong sabihin sa kaninuman. Iniutos niya: Yumaon ka at ipakita mo ang iyong sarili sa saserdote at maghandog ka para sa pagkalinis mo. Maghain ka ayon sa iniutos ni Moises bilang pagpapatotoo sa kanila.
15Lalo pang kumalat ang balita patungkol kay Jesus. Nagdatingan ang napakaraming mga tao upang makinig at upang mapagaling niya sa kanilang mga sakit. 16Ngunit pumunta siya sa ilang at nanalangin.

Jesus touched the leper. Jesus not only touches the leper physically, literally; He also touches the man’s heart and his life. Jesus cures him, makes him happy, and restores him to participation in the social life of the people.
At the end of the Gospel, we read that Jesus withdraws “to deserted places to pray.” In all His busyness, Jesus does not lose touch with God. He keeps in touch with God through prayer. Such is Jesus — a person who is in touch with God and who touches the lives of people.
If you want to touch lives and make a difference in people’s lives, keep in touch with God through prayer. Being in touch with God in prayer is the secret of touching people’s lives.
Lord, make me clean!
Jesus once tipped His disciples, “All that you ask for in prayer, believe that you will receive it and it shall be yours. When you stand to pray, forgive…” (Mk 11:24-25).
Pray sincerely. This is the case of the leper in the Gospel. He prays and believes and is healed. Jesus always wishes the best for us.
The catch is in the sincerity of our hearts, in the purity of our intentions, and in the clarity of what we pray for. I believe that even Jesus checks on His intention and sincerity when He goes off to a lonely place to pray. But why do we still not get our wish, even when our prayers are sincere and our intentions pure? Maybe we can try withdrawing to a lonely place to pray. That place may just be in our hearts. It may be a moment in our day or a corner of our house. There our intentions and sincerity will be purified.
Leprosy
The Hebrew word zaraat, rendered by the Greek lepra, refers to an eruptive skin disease and is not to be associated with Hansen’s disease. Leprosy was feared because the afflicted was regarded as ceremonially unclean. The victim was isolated until it was determined that he was healed, “clean,” or that the disease was not chronic. Its incidence was regarded as an act of God (“stricken by God”), and healing was invariably interpreted as a miracle of divine grace.

Te story of the leper has always been one of my favorite stories of Christ’s miracles. It shows of just how much our faith can do for us. It was by faith that the leper was healed and in the same way, it is only through faith that we receive healing from sin and eternal life.
