A prophet without honor.
Mark 6:1-6
Jesus departed from there and came to his native place,
accompanied by his disciples.
When the sabbath came he began to teach in the synagogue,
and many who heard him were astonished.
They said, “Where did this man get all this?
What kind of wisdom has been given him?
What mighty deeds are wrought by his hands!
Is he not the carpenter, the son of Mary,
and the brother of James and Joseph and Judas and Simon?
And are not his sisters here with us?”
And they took offense at him.
Jesus said to them,
“A prophet is not without honor except in his native place
and among his own kin and in his own house.”
So he was not able to perform any mighty deed there,
apart from curing a few sick people by laying his hands on them.
He was amazed at their lack of faith.

Ang Propetang Walang Karangalan
Marcos 6: 1-6

Amazed at their lack of faith. To have faith is to believe in God, to trust Him, and to depend on Him. Faith makes us accept what God says and does to us. And with faith we will see God perform mighty deeds for us.
At Nazareth, many who have heard Jesus question His family background and doubt His teachings. They listen to their prejudices and so lack the faith needed to see the good works of Jesus.
Where did this man get all this? Is the crab mentality at work among the villagers of Nazareth, the kababayans of Jesus? Instead of honoring Jesus who has become a most sought-after healer, exorcist, and preacher, they take offense at Him. There is something perverse when people cannot bear to see others who have lived among them soar above them. They think that Jesus is only what they saw Him to be while He lived and grew among them. They are not ready to accept a greater revelation of Himself, as more than the child on the block that they have known.
In this case, familiarity breeds contempt and prevents them from having faith in Him.
God does not look at our social or family background. God does not dwell on our past. God always believes in us and trusts our goodness, our capacity, and our commitment.
We are surrounded by the presence of Jesus in His word, in the Eucharist, and in our fellow human beings, especially the poor and the needy.
Resolve to begin and end your day in prayer to Jesus and with inspiring words to family and to people under your care.
God bless you always!
