One of the things that we renew with the opening of the calendar year is friendship. Hence, one of the traditional songs for the New Year is “Auld Lang Syne’’ which begins: “Should all acquaintance be forgotten and never called to mind?’’ Today, the Word of God reminds us: Real and sincere friendship should always make us point to God and to Jesus – to the One who is truly good for our friends. In pointing to Jesus, John the Baptist is telling his disciples: Follow Him, instead of me. This is the same command that Mary tells the servers at the wedding at Cana: “Do whatever He tells you’’ (Jn 2:5).
Jesus is “the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.’’ Jesus is not just a goody companion. . . a cute little “Niño.’’ He is the Savior, and so let us open to Him our need for change and conversion as we start the year.
“I have seen and testified.” John’s task is to make Jesus known. He testifies that Jesus is the Son of God and the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.
John points to the person of Jesus. He plays his role to the full, without attempting to steal the limelight from Jesus. After he fulfills his mission, John walks away and disappears from the scene. He does not cling to his position; he does not interfere in the events about to unravel.
As followers of Jesus, we are called to be His witnesses and to proclaim His good news through lives of caring and loving. After we have done our job, let us fade into the background. Let us not steal the scene from Jesus who should be the center of attention. We play only the supporting roles. Jesus is our superstar.
During a Congress on Evangelization held at the Philippine International Convention Center, Fr. Raniero Cantalamessa, OFMCap, gave such an inspiring talk that he was given a standing ovation. When he realized this, he turned towards the crucifix, to point the people’s attention to Jesus. He was like John the Baptist.
Is Jesus alive in my life?
Do I have the courage to stand and testify to him?
What can I do to make people feel and know that I am witnessing to Jesus?
“Lord Jesus Christ, fill me with the power of your Holy Spirit and let me grow in the knowledge of your love and truth. Let your Spirit be aflame in my heart that I may know and love you more fervently and strive to do your will in all things.”
May the blessing of the Lord be with all god’s people.
God bless you more!
